The surprising thing was that Germany was still using steam locomotives. I had remembered
steam locomotives into the 1950's in the US but by 1964, they had been replaced by diesels.

I was based in McCully Barracks, Wackernheim.
This building was the barracks for B Company, 708th Maintenance Battalion, 8th Army Division.
This was a Germany barracks from WWII.
I ended up with one of the penthouse rooms on the third floor.

January in Wackernheim from the barracks. We used to watch these huge German Hares.
They were more like large dogs in size. Sitting like you normally think of a rabbit, they were
3-4 feet tall at the tips of the ears.

Downtown Wackernheim. My favorite Sunday activity was to go to the pastry shop and have
a slice or two of those incredible tortes.

Downtown Mainz. A very modern city and yet there were still hulks of buildings
destroyed in WWII kept as reminders. |
